Today’s creepy pre-Halloween icon release should incite floods of memories in those who roamed the neighborhood streets in search of candy bars and popcorn balls back in the 1970’s. These unexpectedly scary creations are based on the ridiculously cheap costumes that lined the local department store’s seasonal racks and were desired by kids everywhere.

Come with us as we trudge along dimly lit streets in our quest for the houses with the “good” candy while wearing flimsy plastic masks and badly screen printed garbage bags! Download Retro Masks for Mac, Windows or as a handy CandyBar iContainer now.

Our friends over at Mister Retro have come out with a fun new Photoshop filter called Permanent Press. The filter lets you simulate different kinds of offset printing processes with customizable ink settings and the results are really quite fun. Perfect for that “printed in Asia”, rustic look that could be used in t-shirt designs, retro posters and more.

Head on over to our Flickr page to check out some experiments we conducted with Permanent Press and if you like what you see, then surf on over to Mister Retro and get printing!

Fans of Japanese animation, or anime, are in for a real treat today. Mindy and David have teamed up for a special desktop double-whammy. First up is Moka Akashiya from the manga turned anime series Rosario + Vampire. Moka is a cute schoolgirl who also just happens to be a vampire with a strange taste for tomato juice.

David joins the fun with a desktop picture based on our all-time favorite anime series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Based on the iconic symbol NERV’s commander wears throughout the series, Misato’s Necklace works great on your Mac or PC desktop or as a clever iPhone wallpaper.

Head on over to the Desktop freeware section to download both of these fun desktops as well as David’s Somatic Democratic Mascot Quickpix today!

After a self imposed break, the Iconfactory production line ramps back up in a big way today with the release of an all-new system replacement set from David Lanham. Looking for a nice set of dark-themed folders for that slick black MacBook of yours? Perhaps Aqua blue just isn’t your thing. Either way, we’re willing to bet you’ll love David’s new Agua Onyx Folders available as a freeware icon set starting today. The collection contains over 80 familiar icons including folders, hard drives and trash cans in either Mac OS X, Windows Vista or CandyBar iContainer format.

But that’s not all. David has also whipped up two new Quickpix, the first of which is available today. Unless you’ve been living under a rock these last few months, you probably know this is an election year in the U.S. Now you can proudly display your party preference on your Mac or PC desktop with this week’s release of ‘Somatic Republican Mascot’ or next week’s ‘Somatic Democratic Mascot’. Thanks to David, politics never looked so cute!

Now that the assembly line is moving along again, we invite you to stay tuned for all new icons, desktops and software goodies. All this, plus our favorite holiday is just around the corner. Things are getting good!

We’re Still Kickin’

Since it’s been over a month since our last update we wanted take a moment to let you know we’re still here and pushing pixels as always. Unfortunately those pixels have been for a major client instead of our usual freeware releases. This, combined with Craig’s voyage into Twitterrific revision land has meant there hasn’t been much to post about. Hopefully we should be returning to our regular schedule in the weeks ahead, but for now we’d ask that you hang in there while we work hard to pay the bills and keep the assembly line rolling. Thanks everyone!
