June 8, 2004

By Webmaster

The Iconfactory is proud to announce the release of the first official freeware collection from our new worker, David Lanham. David joined the factory back in April and has been cultivating this unique set of system replacement icons in the interim. Somatic is a set of over 80 icons that you can use with CandyBar to customize your Mac’s folders, trash cans, toolbar icons and more. The set is fun and imaginative and will appeal to both adults and kids alike. Somatic even includes some replacement icons for popular application icons as well as extras thrown in for fun. And don’t forget, that even though this set is built for CandyBar, Pixadex users will find the iContainer complete with keywords for easy searching. So mosey on over and download this monster set today.

This week’s freeware icon release is a sort of visual experiment from Iconfactory artist, Talos Tsui. Totem Pole is a unique set of system and application icons with visual influences from Native American artwork. The icons are designed to stack together in a vertically oriented dock, but also work well on their own. If this collection is popular, Talos predicts more in the series, so drop us a note and let us know your thoughts. Totem Pole is available for both Mac and Win and comes as a handy Pixadex iContainer. Enjoy.

For the second time in three years, The Iconfactory has outgrown its office space in Greensboro, NC. Its now been one year since Designer Anthony Piraino joined the factory, and the recent addition of Designer David Lanham pushed us over the occupancy limit. Since the workers are now packed in tighter than pickles (thanks Ellen!), we’ve made arrangements to move… two doors down to a new space. If all goes according to plan, we should be moving into the new office the week of July 6th. Stay tuned!

Next Tuesday marks the DVD home release of “The Return Of The King”, the final installment in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings. Factory worker and long-time Tolkien reader Dave Brasgalla has taken his excitement about the event and put it to work, crafting a set of over 20 exciting new icons that follow the design aesthetic of the films.

The Lord Of The Rings: Armoury Of The Third Age began as a collection of swords, shields and other objects and heraldry associated with the various races of Middle Earth, but it soon evolved to encompass many other objects from Tolkien’s story. Richly detailed and painstakingly drawn, these miniature paintings will give you the chance to visit Middle Earth everyday – right on your desktop! This latest freeware collection is available now for the Mac, Windows and as a Pixadex iContainer. Lastly, don’t forget to grab the 5 matching desktop pictures available from Dave’s personal page, Pixelhuset.

Arm Yourself with DownloadCheck

May 13, 2004

By Webmaster

Our Chief Typist, Craig Hockenberry has written a new freeware utility that checks for applications in your Downloads folder. It was created in response to the MP3Concept Trojan horse release of April 2004. See John Gruber’s excellent commentary on this Trojan and the controversy/hype that it generated. Although its highly unlikely Mac users will encounter a MP3 or other document type masquerading as an application, it is best to be prepared. DownloadCheck is released as a deterrent for anyone who might consider writing an exploit of this type. We hope that we’ll never need to use it. The utility is available today and is available free of charge.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that a new batch of previously released icon sets have been converted into Pixadex iContainers for you to download. Why bother re-downloading icons you might already have? As with all Pixadex iContainers we release, the icons contain searchable keywords that make finding specific concepts or terms easy as pie. If you use Pixadex, you might want to grab them and replace previously downloaded sets with these new iContainer versions: Las Vegas, Risky & Safety, Smoothicons Vol. 4, World of Copland 6 and Star Wars Vol. 1. Watch for more in the future!
