Today, we are pleased to announce the release of a brand new software product – Twitterrific. Over the past month or so, the workers have discovered the joys of Twitter.

So what exactly is Twitter you ask?

Twitter is a social networking web service that lets you stay in touch with friends, family or even the public at large thanks to short posts or “tweets” that describe what you are doing at any given moment. The concept is simple, strangely addictive and fun through and through. Tell friends, colleagues or strangers what you are snacking on, your current interests, favorite websites or just plain goofy nonsense!

Twitterrific is a menubar application for Mac OS X that lets you both read and post ‘tweets’ to the Twitter network. The application has an extremely small desktop footprint and allows you to expand or collapse the interface to show as much or as little information as you desire. Wing your way to the Twitterrific homepage for more information including screen shots and keyboard shortcuts.

Throw in a dash of Iconfactory iconic goodness, combined with the fact that its totally free, and you have yourself a fun little desktop application that is just calling out for you to give it a whirl. Head on over to Twitter to sign up for a free account, add some friends (and some famous faces) and then download Twitterrific for your Mac. One thing to note: be sure to log out of the Twitter website before you first launch the app to avoid password problems, and you’ll be singing your tweets to the entire world before you know it. Have fun!

All Eyes Turn to that City by the Bay

January 3, 2007

We’re back folks! Fresh and rested from our annual holiday break, the workers are eager to get the new year off and running by cranking up the assembly line and getting back in the pixellated groove. Every year at this time we dust off our WACOM tablets and sort through the thousands of Spams built up over the break, and our thoughts inevitably turn to that little ol’ thing called MacWorld and the city of San Fransisco.

As our old friend Tony Bennett once said ”…high on a hill, it calls to me.” This year, more than any in recent memory, the pull of the City by the Bay and Steve’s Reality distortion field™ seems to be in maximum overdrive. Unfortunately we blew all our air fare on Wii remotes and Bigfoot action figures this Christmas, so we’ll be tracking the rumored 2 hour keynote thanks to our favorite Mac news and gadget websites from the cushy comfort of our office chairs. But for those lucky enough to see the man in person, MacWorld 2007 seems to hold the promise of something special.

Will we see the iTV in action? Will we be lining up to say “Adios!” to our old fashion cell phones in favor of Apple’s long-rumored

Year In Review for 2006

We’re flipping the switches and turning off the assembly line until January 3rd so the workers can take their annual holiday break from the pixel grind. As is tradition around here, we’ve gone back and taken a look at all we accomplished here in 2006 and the results surprised even us.

Of course the big news was that to help mark our 10th anniversary in existence, we somehow managed to complete work on all new versions of both Iconfactory and Stockicons.com. The thousands of hours invested in development paid off in August when we went live after a week of teaser animations that were the talk of the Internet. With the launch, we welcomed our sister site, the DeskStop into the factory fold and have since served up 18 cool desktop pictures. The feedback has been fantastic and made all the effort truely worth it. Thanks for your patience and support!

This year saw updates to iPulse, xScope and most notably IconBuilder to get it ready for the huge sizes that the new OS’s are bringing. We also released our first freeware OS X widget – Dine-O-Matic which has been a favorite of restaurant goers everywhere.

Of course the Iconfactory wouldn’t be, well, the Iconfactory without icons and 2006 was a banner year. The dedicated folks at the pixel controls cranked out 28 freeware sets this year for a total of 636 icons. Memorable sets included Torino, V for Vendetta, Hieroglyphica, the Futurama and Litho series, Mission Impossible and the Float Sneak Peek. The iContainer offerings this year included three hugely popular CandyBar collections – Agua and Amora by David and ClearBlack by Talos. Watch for more CandyBar sets in 2007!

As we head out to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, we wanted to say thanks once again to all of you who have supported us with your kind words, registering your copies of our software or purchasing stock icon collections. Thanks to you we’ve managed to flourish for over ten years in this industry. Who knew we could make a living pushing tiny pixels for so long? We hope you’ll stay tuned in 2007 because we’ve got some stuff you are going to go crazy for. Updates to Pixadex and CandyBar are in the pipe as well as some new developments that we think will surprise and delight you. So we leave you with Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year everyone!

Although the Moose is our last freeware release of 2006, we hope you’ll give him a good home and let him bask in the warmth of your hearts and hearths. Just don’t get your computer too close to the popping embers! Merry Christmas everyone!

All aboard the Polar Express!

“On Christmas Eve many years ago, I lay quietly in my bed. I did not rustle the sheets. I breathed slowly and silently. I was listening for a sound – a sound a friend had told me I’d never hear – the ringing bells of Santa’s sleigh.” So begins Chris Van Allsburg’s classic tale of wonder, belief, and a trip to the North Pole.

The Polar Express is Iconfactory artist Anthony Piraino’s latest freeware release, based on the 2004 film version of the story. From the Conductor’s hat to the bell from Santa’s sleigh, this set will add a little of the spirit of Christmas to your desktop. The Polar Express is available today for your Mac, PC or as a handy Pixadex iContainer. Merry Christmas!

Microsoft, Apple, and an Icon

December 11, 2006

As we were skimming through the servers stats this morning we noticed an unusual spike and started investigating. You may have read an entry at Daring Fireball yesterday pointing out the apparent misappropriation of an Apple icon on Microsoft’s ordering page for Windows Vista Business. We scoured our referral logs and discovered that a post about it at theappleblog had hit Digg and the comments on both were beginning to fill with wild speculation.

We thought we should post a quick blurb to respond to most of the comments referencing us. We had nothing to do with the icon in question. To our knowledge it is an Apple icon that has been used in Mac OS X Server software for years and was created by designers at Apple.

That’s about it. Nothing more to see here. Move along please. Thanks!

“The Night of Meat”

December 11, 2006

By Webmaster

WARNING: if you are a vegetarian then we advise you to skip this post. Nothing to see here, move along. But if you enjoy a good hearty steak, or just about any other mouth watering cut of meat you can think of, then this one is for you!

Each year around this time, the workers get themselves psyched up for our annual Christmas dinner which is affectionately called “The night of meat”. The Greensboro crew and their families will be heading out to Leblon Churrascaria Brazilian Steakhouse. What’s so special about this dining occasion you ask? The answer is hard to put into words since our mouths are usually filled with delicious food. Basically, the gauchos bring pit-cooked meat on skewers and hand cut portions for you all night long. From flank steak and leg of lamb to top sirloin and beef tenderloin, its a meat eaters heaven. They even have a clever system to avoid confusion when serving consisting of place cards that have a green “give me more!” symbol on one side, and a red “I’ll never eat meat again” symbol on the other. That’s an exaggeration, but you get the idea.

If you are ever in Greensboro, we highly recommend Leblon, the service is great and the bang for the buck cannot be beat. Just don’t be tempted by the salad bar… more croutons now means less prime rib later! Now if you’ll excuse us, we have to go prepare ourselves mentally. When we finish we usually feel like Joey from that episode of Friends where he eats the entire turkey.

We’re pleased to announce the QuickPix 2006 Icon Collection consisting of all the individual QuickPix released this past year. If you missed any particular QuickPix icon in the past 365 days, now you can grab this handy set and complete your collection. QuickPix in 2006 ranged from hardware icons like Apple’s MacBook laptops and Nintendo’s slick Wii console drive, to less serious affairs like Leonard Nimoy’s Head and Shakey, the friendly beverage. We hope you enjoyed our efforts to bring some fun to your desktop and hope you’ll stick around for all new QuickPix starting in 2007.

Safety Dance!

December 6, 2006

Judging by yesterday’s traffic and piles of great comments, it seems like being safe when playing the Wii is the new black. With tens of thousands of people viewing the Missing Wii Safety manual pages we posted on Flickr, we thought there might be a few visitors who would enjoy plastering those absurd diagrams all over their computer desktops.

So we are pleased to bring you the Wii Safety desktop pictures in two amazing colors (teal and ecru) just in time for the holidays. When your friend unwraps that Wii he’s been wanting on Christmas morning, be sure to download and set his desktop to one of these helpful images, lest he jump out of a plane with a game console on his back. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
